The Best Places in Sheridan & around

  1. A traditional Hmong cross-stitch pattern meaning "home" runs through the whole room, which tells you exactly what Diane Moua is going for. The neighborhood restaurant inside Minneapolis' Food Building blends Hmong-American cooking with a serious pastry program, and the two halves genuinely need each other. Food & Wine named it Restaurant of the Year, and it landed on the New York Times Restaurant List. The sesame balls have their own fan club.

  2. Deep teal walls, hanging ferns, and paper lanterns turned a former strip club into a Southeast Asian street food restaurant that somehow feels like the right call even in a Minneapolis winter. The cocktails lean tropical, the menu ranges across Vietnam, Bali, and beyond, and the chef behind it all, Christina Nguyen, took the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest. Book on Resy; walk-ins are optimistic.

  3. Rank 3. Vinai

    Hmong Thai

Named for the Thai refugee camp where chef Yia Vang was born, Vinai is a Hmong restaurant that brings a cuisine most Minneapolis diners have never properly encountered. The menu runs from Hill Tribe chicken to grilled lamb heart, and the hot sauces come from family recipes. The New York Times put it on their Restaurant List, and Bon Appétit named it among America's best new restaurants. Every dish has a story, and Vang is usually around to tell it.

  6. The focaccia is baked in-house, which explains why the bread alone prompts takeaway orders. Marty's is a neighborhood sandwich shop in Northeast Minneapolis that spent a couple of years as a pop-up before finding a permanent home, and the menu still has that carefully considered quality. Chicken salad, a BLT with local bacon, a salami and prosciutto situation with fennel slaw. The breakfast sandwich stacked with hash browns has developed its own following.

  13. The tortillas here come from heirloom corn nixtamalized in-house, and they're the point, not the packaging. Oro by Nixta is a Mexican restaurant that grew from a tortilleria, and the menu still thinks that way: braised meats, seasonal produce, and a deep roster of moles and salsas all orbit the corn. It landed on The New York Times Restaurant List in 2024, which tracks for a place this quietly serious about a grain most kitchens treat as an afterthought.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
