The Best Places in Songji & around

  1. Rank 1. Mizue

    Kanazawa Sushi

  2. The Mandarin Oriental, Taipei is a luxury hotel that arrived looking like it had been here since the 1930s, all deep Art Deco bones and none of the glass-tower minimalism most new Asian luxury hotels default to. The rooms are among the largest in the city, the spa is expansive, and between a Cantonese restaurant, an Italian, a French, a tea lounge, a cocktail bar, and a cake shop, leaving is genuinely optional. It holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star.

  9. André Fu designed the interiors, and that name alone explains the particular combination of dazzling and quietly residential you feel inside. This luxury hotel occupies the upper floors of a Songshan high-rise, with 86 rooms and panoramic views of Taipei's skyline and hills. On-staff "Culturists" run daily programs from neighborhood walks to local tastings. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  10. A roasting room visible from the counter sets the tone at this Taipei specialty coffee shop, where the in-house slow drip takes a full day to prepare tomorrow's batch. Dark wood and a calm atmosphere keep the focus on what's in the cup, not the interior. The menu runs espresso, pour-over, and cold drip, with a side-by-side espresso set for anyone who wants to think a little harder about what they're drinking.

Faux red brick overhead gives the dining room the feel of a modern Chinese home, warm without being heavy. This is a Cantonese set-menu restaurant inside the Capella hotel, where the kitchen layers contemporary touches onto the classics, truffle finding its way into the dim sum, sakura ebi into the stir-fried cabbage. The tea selection is curated to pair with the meal, which is the kind of detail that separates a thoughtful kitchen from a merely competent one.

  19. A two-story house tucked into a lane off Linsen North Road, After5 is a coffee shop that slides into neighborhood bar as the evening arrives. The lofted upper floor looks down over the main bar, which gives the place a lived-in, borrowed-apartment feeling. Single-origin coffees and fruit-forward signature drinks share the menu with tea, and later with beer and alcohol. It's the kind of spot where nobody seems to be in a hurry to leave.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
