A ryokan in one of Japan's quieter hot spring cities, Tendo-so gives every room its own private onsen bath, which removes a certain amount of the morning negotiation around the public pools. The seven detached cottages, called hanare, are modeled on traditional tea-ceremony structures and lean fully into classical Japanese design, while the main house runs a little more contemporary. A kaiseki dinner is served each evening, with grilled eel holding the place of honor.
