The Top 100 Places to Eat in Washington
The best places to eat in Washington, by the professional record: James Beard Awards, 50 Best, and Michelin Guide have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Albi comes out on top.
Causa and Moon Rabbit hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Washingtonian next.
-
Rank 1. Albi
Palestinian
Everything at this Palestinian live-fire restaurant in Navy Yard passes through a roaring open hearth before it reaches the table, and the renovated dining room leaves the kitchen's fire in full view. Michael Rafidi, a James Beard Outstanding Chef winner with a Michelin star, draws on his family's Ramallah roots while working with mid-Atlantic seasons. The tasting menu is the move, though the wood-fired lamb pies and hummus hold their own à la carte.

Rank 2. Causa
Nikkei Peruvian
A tucked-away tasting menu for about 20 people in Blagden Alley, Causa fuses Japanese technique with Peruvian ingredients in a cuisine called Nikkei. The chef structures the meal as a journey from Lima's coast up through the Andes to the Amazon, so the menu moves with a logic you feel before you understand it. It holds a Michelin star and a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. Bring someone you want to impress, or just go alone and take notes.

Vietnamese
A muffuletta reimagined as a rice-noodle dish tells you pretty much everything about what Kevin Tien is doing at this modern Vietnamese restaurant in Penn Quarter. His Louisiana upbringing and Vietnamese heritage push and pull at each other in ways that somehow feel inevitable rather than forced. Pastry chef Susan Bae won North America's Best Pastry Chef Award, and her desserts make seaweed and green curry sound like obvious choices. It landed at #24 on North America's 50 Best Restaurants.

Rank 3. Oyster Oyster
American
A nine-course vegetable tasting menu in Shaw where the chef holds a James Beard Award and a Michelin star, and still manages to make a beet taste like pastrami. Rob Rubba's kitchen treats local farms as the whole point, not a selling line, and the results are the kind of thing that makes omnivores quietly reconsider their priorities. The bread alone, enriched with "garleeks" and served with sunflower-marigold butter, gets talked about for days afterward.

Contemporary New American
A moss wall and a foie gras "negroni" topped with Campari gelée tell you pretty quickly that this is not a low-key bistro. Ryan Ratino's contemporary New American spot on 14th Street holds a Michelin star and earns it with cooking that is quietly surreal without being smug about it. The room is warm enough that you forget you're at a special-occasion restaurant until the check arrives.

Afro-Caribbean
A chain-link curtain separates the Salamander hotel lobby from Kwame Onwuachi's Afro-Caribbean restaurant, which pulls from his Nigerian, Jamaican, Trinidadian, and Creole roots. The menu is built for sharing, with hoe crab served in the shell alongside plantain cakes, and a crispy lamb bowl that nods to Ben's Chili Bowl. It landed on North America's 50 Best Restaurants list, and the room fills like it knows.

Rank 5. Fiola
Italian
Stone walls, Warhol-esque prints, and servers who greet you before you've touched the door handle: Fiola is a tasting-menu Italian on Pennsylvania Avenue where Fabio Trabocchi's kitchen treats pasta scraps as an occasion for caviar and sea urchin. Several tasting menus let you calibrate exactly how far down the rabbit hole to go. It holds a Michelin star and landed at number seven on 50 Top Italy's global list.

A curved counter wrapping a stainless-steel workspace is where dinner happens at José Andrés's avant-garde tasting room, a two Michelin star, AAA Five Diamond operation that takes the small-bites format seriously enough to earn the credentials. Nothing on the menu looks like what it turns out to be, which is either thrilling or unsettling depending on your relationship with surprise. Sharply suited servers keep the whole production moving with warmth rather than ceremony.

Rank 5. Mita
Vegetarian Peruvian
Plant-based Peruvian tasting menus in Shaw sounds like a premise that requires a disclaimer, yet Mita holds a Michelin star and a James Beard nomination for Best New Restaurant. The chef's team pulls from across Latin America, so the flavors run from Andean to coastal without apology. Two tasting menu lengths mean you can commit at whatever level feels reasonable on a Tuesday. The bar program is serious enough that Punch named the team among its best new bartenders.

Spanish
A wood-fired hearth and a smoker do the heavy lifting in this fine dining room on the third floor of a Glover Park townhouse, where chef Danny Lledó builds a tasting menu around the food of Valencia. Rice cooked over the open fire is the gravitational center of the meal. The room holds only a handful of tables, and after dinner guests move to the lounge for coffee. It holds a Michelin star and AAA Five Diamonds.

A glass-and-marble box that practically dares the sky to blink first, Imperfecto is a modernist Latin American fine dining room where the counter seats directly under the chef's station feel like a restaurant folded inside another one. The menu works through Latin flavors with precise, elaborate technique, and a Michelin star backs the ambition. Bring patience, an appetite, and someone worth sitting across from for a long evening.

Rank 11. Pineapple & Pearls
New American
Chefs in custom gold Nikes, LL Cool J on the speakers, and caviar occasionally served with gummy bears: Aaron Silverman's Capitol Hill tasting room is not doing the hushed-temple thing. This prix-fixe spot holds a Michelin star while leaning hard into the party, with tableside absinthe cocktails and truffle-laced dishes that arrive with a story attached. American
A four-course prix-fixe in Columbia Heights where cacio e pepe shows up as a Bartlett-pear salad and no one bats an eye. Chef Yuan Tang's menu roams freely from steakhouse classics to Southeast Asian detours, and the mix-and-match format means the bar can match wine to whatever path you picked. It holds a Michelin star, and the room skews lively enough that "fine dining" undersells how relaxed the whole thing feels.

The wood-fired hearth in the open kitchen sets the mood before anything arrives at the table. This fine dining room in a Shaw alley does Mid-Atlantic cooking with a Southern undertow, and the chef's commitment to the region shows in everything from rooftop herbs to the catfish slider that's been on the menu since forever. A corn broth that quietly dismantles everything you thought about corn broth is a good sign you're in the right place. Elcielo is a Michelin-starred fine dining tasting menu restaurant near Union Market where the Colombian-born chef turns his home country into a deeply personal, course-by-course argument. The chocotherapy dessert has become a thing people mention unprompted. The room runs warm in a way that doesn't feel managed.

Rank 16. Jônt
American, Japanese
A dessert counter that ends with a treasure box of mignardises tells you something about the ambitions here. Jônt is a counter-seating tasting menu restaurant above Bresca, where Ryan Ratino runs an American-Japanese kitchen earning two Michelin stars. Sharp-suited servers and laser-focused chefs work in close quarters while a high-energy playlist keeps the room from tipping into reverence. The menu centers on top-tier Japanese seafood and meat, handled with enough finesse to justify the full evening.
-
Rank 16. Pascual
Mexican
The name honors San Pasqual, patron saint of cooks, and someone in the kitchen grinds masa from heirloom corn every single day. This energetic Capitol Hill Mexican restaurant is built around the hearth, and the chefs spent two years working with local farmers just to secure the right herbs. Everything lands in the middle of the table for sharing. It landed on North America's 50 Best list, and getting a reservation still takes some planning.

String lights hang above a counter facing an open kitchen, and the menu opens with challah that the kitchen calls "really, really, really good" without any embarrassment. Rose's Luxury is a prix-fixe spot in Capitol Hill where the cooking runs from spiced pork with lychee to Korean rice cakes in gochujang alla vodka, all served family-style and at a pace that feels more like a dinner party than a restaurant. Puglian Italian
A converted warehouse in NoMa where the stainless-steel open kitchen and a glass-encased wine cellar share a room with exposed brick and farmhouse warmth, somehow without contradiction. Nicholas Stefanelli's tasting menu draws on his Puglian roots, and the pasta and bread courses show it most plainly. The staff seem to genuinely enjoy being here, which guests tend to catch. A Michelin star and a spot on 50 Top Italy's global list.

Rank 20. Perry's
Japanese
The rooftop draws Adams Morgan brunch-seekers, but the real reason to come is Masako Morishita's Japanese comfort food, which won her a 2024 James Beard Award for Emerging Chef. This neighborhood restaurant has long been a sushi standby, though the menu has drifted into more interesting territory: edamame dumplings with Parmesan, fried mochi in dashi, a shrimp-katsu burger that commits fully to its own premise. The rotating specials and occasional Saturday prix fixe breakfasts keep regulars checking back.

Rank 23. Anju
Korean
The name says it all: "anju" means Korean food made to go with a drink, and this gastropub on 18th Street takes that premise seriously, with soju, makgeolli, and beer running alongside a menu of fried snacks, rich stews, and banchan. Brick walls, wood floors, and a bit of funky art make it feel like a neighborhood spot that happens to be packed every night. The chef is a James Beard nominee, and the cooking has a mom's-kitchen warmth that earns that comparison without being sentimental.

Rank 23. Omakase at Barracks Row
Japanese
Fourteen seats at a counter, up a set of metal stairs past paintings made by pressing inked fish onto rice paper, which is either the best possible preview of dinner or a very specific art movement. This Michelin-starred omakase pulls seasonal seafood from Tokyo's Toyosu market, and the chef trained under Nakazawa before landing here. A Minibar alum walks you through each piece with the care of someone who means it.
-
Rank 23. Rasika
Modern Indian
The lamb rogan josh arrives layered with enough depth to make you wonder what the kitchen is actually doing back there. Rasika is a modern Indian restaurant near the Mall, loud and well-lit in the way that says everyone is welcome and no one is being precious about it. The naan alone justifies the bread basket order, and the menu moves comfortably from kebabs to curries without a single piece of decorative kitsch in sight.

A glass-walled dining room that reads more like a sunroom than a tasting menu destination, Little Pearl is the quieter, more intimate sibling in the Rose's Luxury family of Capitol Hill restaurants. The seasonal menu rotates constantly, save for the signature angel egg amuse, and the wine pairings show the same offbeat curiosity as the food. A Michelin star, and somehow one of the more approachable price points among D.C. tasting menus.
-
Rank 27. Lutèce
French
Pressed-tin ceiling, exposed brick, wine bottles lining the shelves above your head: this Georgetown neo-bistro looks exactly like the French place you've been trying to find in this city. The seasonal menu is deliberately short and liable to change, which feels like a feature rather than a bug. A counter-service BBQ spot in suburban Maryland where the American Wagyu brisket is buttery enough to stop conversation mid-sentence. The smoked turkey and peppery pork ribs fill out a tray you'll keep adding to despite your better judgment, and the sides, brisket-studded beans included, pull their weight. The line forms before the doors open, which tells you something about a strip-mall pizzeria in suburban Maryland. Tony Conte left fine dining to make neo-Neapolitan pies here, and the blistered crusts show it. A James Beard nominee and a spot on 50 Top Pizza USA, the place punches well past its zip code. Midnight-blue walls, gold accents, and a Persian rug that has no business being this plush set the mood at Apéro, a French restaurant on P Street where champagne and caviar are essentially the whole thesis. Laotian, Thai
Seng Luangrath more or less put Laotian food on the DC map, and her Columbia Heights dining room is where it started. The menu swings wide, from crispy coconut rice salad to warming soups and curries, and the "jungle menu" keeps things interesting with grilled chicken hearts and rice-fermented pork belly. Sticky rice is non-negotiable. Dinner only, casual, and built for sharing, meaning the more people you bring, the better your night goes.

Rank 59. Your Only Friend
American
A sandwich bar that also takes cocktails seriously, Your Only Friend sits in Shaw with a menu full of pun names and a genuinely considered drinks list. The sandwiches lean into comfort food done with some wit, and the sides and bar snacks fill out a meal without much effort. A Michelin Bib Gourmand, which means the kitchen is doing something right at a price that won't sting.

Street Food Indian
Potato-stuffed puris doused in yogurt and tamarind are the opening argument at this Indian street food spot tucked into Union Market. The room is loud and color-splashed in the way that makes you feel like you showed up underdressed no matter what you're wearing. Meherwan Irani, a James Beard Award winner for his Asheville original, brought the concept north, and the DC version has carved out its own following among the city's suddenly crowded field of Indian restaurants.

Shareable plates at this Navy Yard restaurant pull from enough corners of the world that the menu reads like a well-stamped passport. The chef behind it has a diverse résumé, and that shows in combinations that feel considered rather than random. The room draws a neighborhood crowd that actually seems happy to be there, which in a trendy district is its own quiet achievement.

Rank 66. Kappo
Wagyu Omakase Japanese
A few steps below street level on MacArthur Boulevard, this intimate counter seats you facing the sunken kitchen where the team runs an eight-course Wagyu omakase. The style is Kappo, meaning the chef works in full view and the pacing feels personal rather than performative. Wagyu anchors almost every course, with seafood woven through, and the meal closes with Wagyu miso soup and rice that lands like the best part of coming home.

New American
The rum cake arrives tableside, which is either theater or efficiency depending on your mood. Marcus Samuelsson's hotel restaurant in NoMa runs New American with a wide lens, pulling in tamarind, obe, and uni-béarnaise alongside the kind of blue cornbread that people talk about unprompted. The room dazzles and the menu follows. A James Beard Emerging Chef semifinalist runs the kitchen.

The arepa arrives wrapped like a little gift, seared masa around a fried egg, tomato, cotija, and avocado. This all-day Latin American spot on Florida Avenue runs from morning coffee through dinner without any of the fuss, and the price point reflects that. Upstairs, an intimate room with original details fills with regulars chasing the pork empanadas and masa gnocchi with braised beef.

Mediterranean
José Andrés fills this mezze restaurant with the energy of a market that never quite closes, the open kitchen turning meat on spits while the room hums in Aegean blues. The wide-ranging menu covers dips and pita, flatbreads, smoky vegetables, and braised lamb, built for sharing and grazing in whatever order feels right. The bar pours coastal spirits and riffs on classics. It holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

French-influenced New American
A Federal-period Georgetown townhouse carved into six dining rooms across three floors, each one feeling like it belongs to a different century of the same family. This is the fine dining room where Georgetown parents take their kids to celebrate things, and the veteran servers have clearly done this long enough to find the whole ritual quietly amusing. The French-influenced New American kitchen runs on classic instincts, and holds a AAA Four Diamond rating.

Ethiopian
A sunny Ethiopian cafe in Silver Spring where you pick your injera before anything else, choosing between imported (extra tangy) and local, both soft enough to do the job properly. The menu is vibrant and the cooking runs from a bubbling chickpea stew to crispy beef tibs to collards that hold their own. Show up early and order the wheat flatbread fried in butter and drizzled with honey. A James Beard semifinalist chef runs the kitchen.

Eric Adjepong's Ghanaian restaurant spreads across multiple floors, each with its own look, all of them full on a weeknight. You can do a tasting menu or graze from the à la carte bar menu, a riff on Ghana's casual chop-bar tradition. The cooking moves between smoky, tangy, and deeply savory in ways that feel unfamiliar and completely right at once. The seafood jollof pot alone has colonized a lot of dinner conversation in this city.

Persian
The rice alone explains why the New York Times put this upscale Persian restaurant on its 2024 restaurant list: the tadig comes out with a shattering crust, and the fluffy sour-cherry version beside it is its own argument. Classic stews anchor the menu, with duck fessenjoon and beef with dried lime doing the heavy lifting. The room is relaxed enough for families, polished enough for a proper date.

Seasonal Italian
A five-course prix-fixe of seasonal Italian, five nights a week, in a room that reads like a neighborhood spot rather than the occasion it technically is. The cooking is quiet and direct, letting good ingredients do the work without much fuss or flourish. Breads and desserts are made in-house, and the antipasti arrive fast, which is fortunate, because you're otherwise looking at a two-to-three-hour sit.

Mexican
José Andrés's colorful Mexican restaurant near the Mall earns a Michelin Bib Gourmand on the strength of regionally inflected cooking: black bean soup with avocado leaves and crema, chilaquiles with real crunch, quesadillas on housemade tortillas. The ceviche bar is the move if you want a seat with a show. Mezcal and tequila cocktails are taken seriously, and guacamole arrives unfinished, mixed tableside to your specification.

Rank 81. Stellina Pizzeria
Neo-Neapolitan Pizza
The wood-burning oven is the whole point here, and it runs hot enough that pies come out of it faster than the counter moves. Stellina is a casual neo-Neapolitan pizzeria in Union Market territory, with colorful tiles, red stools, and the kind of blistered, chewy crust that makes "simple counter service" feel like a charitable description. The fritti is a good opening move, and the tiramisu won't embarrass anyone. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand.

Rank 81. The Bombay Club
Indian
The dining room is dressed up like a British Raj club, which is exactly the kind of setting that makes sense a few blocks from the White House. This is traditional Indian fine dining where politicians have been settling into the half-moon banquettes for decades, and the polished cooking moves across the subcontinent, from northern grilled meats to southern coconut-laced seafood. The Washington Post named it among D.C.'s 40 best restaurants.

American
Olive-green velvet booths, a room that hums with the particular energy of people who might be somebody, and martinis that make a two-hour lunch feel like a reasonable life choice. Stephen Starr revived this old Washington institution near the White House into a full-service American restaurant with a menu that leans classic without apology: French dip, lobster bisque, oysters in beurre blanc. The champagne layer cake arrives frosted in pink, which somehow feels correct.

American
A cool marble bar greets you before you've even found your table, and the room behind it, skylighted and hung with art, reads as elegant without being airless. This is a polished American dining room in Kalorama where the menu follows the seasons and the service stays warm instead of formal. The martinis are serious, and the pastry program gives you an actual reason to stay for dessert.

Olive trees planted between the tables are doing a lot of heavy lifting, but this roomy Greek restaurant on N Street sells the Aegean fantasy well enough that you forget you're in Dupont Circle. The menu runs through the classics, spanakopita, souvlaki, avgolemono, fish grilled with capers flown in from Greece, and the fries have a devoted following. Baklava with iced Greek yogurt closes things out the only sensible way.
-
Rank 97. Blue Duck Tavern
American
The wood-burning oven at the center of the open kitchen is roughly the size of a studio apartment, and it sets the agenda here. Blue Duck Tavern is an upscale American restaurant inside the Park Hyatt, with soaring windows, walnut seating, and glass-enclosed booths that regulars treat as personal property. The menu leans into farms and purveyors, and the dessert station and near-30-tea list reward anyone who lingers.
