The Best Places in East Downtown

  1. The cheeseburger on a housemade English muffin has become something of a Houston landmark, but at this EaDo bistro the menu makes every decision feel equally consequential. Nancy's Hustle holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and a James Beard semifinalist nod, and the cooking is seasonal and bold without being precious about it. The room stays packed and loud most nights, which somehow only adds to the fun.

  2. Rank 2. Koffeteria

    Cambodian Bakery

The beef pho kolache alone explains why this Cambodian-influenced bakery and coffee shop landed on the New York Times' list of best bakeries in the country. Chef Vanarin Kuch, a Top Chef alum and James Beard Outstanding Bakery semifinalist, builds a menu where Southeast Asian flavors drift easily into French, Mexican, and Brazilian territory. The Salty Cambodian latte, finished with condensed milk and sourdough butter, has regulars skipping the cortado for good.

  3. Rank 3. J-Bar-M Barbecue

    Texas Barbecue

Four custom-built smokers anchor this sprawling East End barbecue joint, which runs a Tex-Mex menu alongside the classic Texas lineup so you can follow brisket enchiladas with a meat plate and call it research. There's a beer garden and live music too, which means an afternoon here has a way of becoming an evening. The Michelin Guide has it selected, and the Houston Chronicle put it on its top 100 list. Come with a plan, then abandon it at the counter.

  5. A casual East Downtown wine bar and pizza spot where the menu shifts with the seasons but fennel sausage pizza and rigatoni Bolognese tend to anchor things. The vegetable dishes punch above their station, like a cabbage salad in pistachio-apricot agrodolce that sounds like a dare and tastes like a plan. Sister to Nancy's Hustle next door, which means the neighborhood is doing just fine.

  7. A colorful mural marks this East End taqueria, where the breakfast taco is taken seriously and the line on weekends is not a rumor. Chorizo, potato, and egg; bacon and egg; barbacoa on Saturdays when the patience holds out. It's a cash-and-plastic, paper-plate kind of spot, which is exactly the point. Show up early or budget time to stand around looking forward to it.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
