The Best Places in Downtown & East Necklace

  1. Shinola, the brand that sells you a handsome watch and a bicycle you'll never ride, also runs this downtown Detroit hotel, and it lands with the Michelin Guide's one Key designation. The rooms carry the same crafted-in-America aesthetic the brand trades on, and the address on Woodward puts you squarely in a neighborhood that has visibly decided it isn't done yet. A stay here feels less like a hotel booking and more like a small wager on the city.

  2. Rank 2. Chenin

    Wine Bar

Chenin is a tiny wine bar tucked inside The Siren Hotel, pouring natural and biodynamic bottles to a room lit softly enough to forgive anyone's skin-contact experiments. Salty snacks and a mortadella sandwich piled onto focaccia keep the evening going longer than planned. Seats are scarce, so arrive when the doors open. It was a James Beard Award nominee for Best New Bar.

  5. The terra cotta atrium under a massive skylight is the first thing that stops you in this downtown Detroit hotel, which has been around forever and knows it. Rooms run to tall windows and high ceilings, the bones of a grand old skyscraper kept largely intact through a careful restoration. It sits right where downtown meets Midtown, so the theaters, stadiums, and galleries are all on foot.

  6. Rank 4. Leila

    Middle Eastern Dessert

A Lebanese restaurant on Capitol Park named for the family matriarch, Leila leans into home-cooking warmth rather than white-tablecloth formality. The New York Times called out the Lebanese Sundae among the best dishes eaten across the country in 2024: rose ice cream with orange blossom water hidden under a cloud of fairy floss, the whole thing buried in pistachios, arriving at the table looking like it has somewhere to be.

  7. Apartments with a washer/dryer and live plants in every unit, inside the landmarked Book Tower. ROOST is an extended-stay boutique hotel where the studios and one- or two-bedroom suites run closer to a furnished apartment than a standard room, with full kitchens and a bikes-to-borrow program. Dogs are welcome, and when cooking feels like too much, the building's own restaurant options are right downstairs.

  9. Rank 9. Prime + Proper

    Modern American Steakhouse

Glass, marble, and open-flame grills fill a room that makes clear this is a steakhouse with architectural ambitions. Downtown Detroit's Prime + Proper dry-ages its USDA Prime and Japanese Miyazaki cuts in-house before the fire gets anywhere near them, which is either discipline or showmanship, and possibly both. The wine list swings between Napa and the Old World. It ranked 65th on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, for what that's worth on a Tuesday night in Michigan.

  10. Dessert Oasis is a big, industrial coffee shop in Capitol Park, with enough booths and long tables that nobody has to fight over an outlet. The Rochester roaster pours the standard third-wave lineup, pour-overs included, plus cakes and cheesecakes, and a seasonal drink involving cranberry bitters and gingersnap-infused oat milk. Weekdays mean students and remote workers who've turned the place into an office with better lighting.

  11. Rank 10. SPKRBOX

    Coffee

SPKRBOX is a downtown Detroit coffee shop that answered the question "what if this also served negronis" and kept going. The second-floor seats overlook the street, the espresso drinks get fancy, and the cocktails come with coffee syrup in them. The basement is a soundproofed, futuristic lounge called the Orange Room, so the 3 p.m. latte and the 11 p.m. second wind both have somewhere to go.

  13. Rank 13. Huddle Soft Serve

    Ice Cream Shop

  14. Rank 15. Candy Bar

    Cocktail Bar

  15. Eatóri Market is a casual Italian-leaning cafe and grocery on Capitol Park, where the dining room grew into the old grocery space and the groceries moved next door into a former nail bar. The pours of wine are generous, the menu is the kind you can eat in a sweater, and the patio is built for watching Capitol Park go by. Reservations run through Resy, which feels fancy for a place that also sells you pantry staples.

  16. Rank 15. Iggy’s Eggies

    Sandwich Shop

  17. Rank 15. Mootz Pizzeria + Bar

    New York-style Pizzeria

Mootz is a downtown Detroit pizzeria that sells New York-style slices by the wedge, plus a menu that keeps going once you've dealt with the pizza. There's a meatball situation involving beef, pork, and a grandmother, and the pastas and oversized salads are there for anyone who came for a sit-down dinner instead of a fold-and-walk. It all runs casual and cheap enough to wear whatever you already have on.

  18. Rank 15. Shelby

    Speakeasy

Shelby is a basement cocktail bar in the Financial District, where finding the door is the first round of the evening. Downstairs, the drinks run from a proper espresso martini to a pineapple Averna negroni riff, backed by shared plates like beef tartare and a mushroom dish that politely impersonates escargot. It was a James Beard semifinalist for outstanding bar program. Book on Resy so you only get lost once.

  19. Rank 15. The Lone Goat

    British Pub

  20. The Royce is a wine bar and bottle shop near Grand Circus Park, where walnut shelving, globe lights, and library ladders make buying a bottle feel faintly like checking out a book. A 12-seat bar anchors the first floor, with cured meats and cheeses to keep the pours company. Over 300 bottles are for sale, plenty by the glass, and classes are on offer for anyone who'd rather understand the list than guess at it.

  21. Rank 15. The Skip

    Tiki Bar

The Skip is a cocktail bar in the Belt alleyway, where the walls open up in summer and the frozen drinks come out to meet the breeze. Winter closes the patio and swaps in tiki-style cocktails and holiday specials built on nostalgia. Matty Matheson designed the menu, though anyone wanting a proper sit-down meal gets pointed to the bigger sibling, Standby, a few feet away. Expect downtown energy and a festival mood in any season.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
