The Best Places to Eat and Stay in Golden Triangle & around

  1. The view from the upper floors puts the White House close enough to make you feel briefly important. This Italian Renaissance hotel on Lafayette Square has been the discreet address of choice for presidents, diplomats, and people who prefer their name not in the papers, and it carries that old-world air without letting the plumbing get old-world too. Holds a Michelin Key and a Forbes Four Star.

  2. A butler, a bottle of champagne, and a ceremonial saber await at this grand hotel two blocks from the White House, where the nightly sabering ritual sets the tone. The coffered ceilings and Palladian windows date to an opening presided over by Coolidge, and the corner of 16th and K has been D.C.'s definitive power address ever since. A Forbes Four Star property, and the kind of place foreign dignitaries treat as a given.

  3. The oak-and-charcoal grill doing steady work on Ibérico pork and whole fish is a reasonable argument for why this Spanish restaurant inside a food hall draws a serious crowd. The chef, an alum of José Andrés's Minibar, runs the room with a light touch: tapas at the bar, big shared platters for the table, and a Basque cheesecake that regulars treat as non-negotiable. The patio helps on good days.

  6. The dining room is dressed up like a British Raj club, which is exactly the kind of setting that makes sense a few blocks from the White House. This is traditional Indian fine dining where politicians have been settling into the half-moon banquettes for decades, and the polished cooking moves across the subcontinent, from northern grilled meats to southern coconut-laced seafood. The Washington Post named it among D.C.'s 40 best restaurants.

  7. Olive-green velvet booths, a room that hums with the particular energy of people who might be somebody, and martinis that make a two-hour lunch feel like a reasonable life choice. Stephen Starr revived this old Washington institution near the White House into a full-service American restaurant with a menu that leans classic without apology: French dip, lobster bisque, oysters in beurre blanc. The champagne layer cake arrives frosted in pink, which somehow feels correct.

  8. Rank 8. Shōtō

    Modern Japanese

A volcanic stone installation cascades from the ceiling of this sleek modern Japanese restaurant in Midtown Center, where the lighting is calibrated precisely enough to make everyone look good. The menu runs from robata-grilled skewers to sushi, and the Japanese whiskey list is long enough to require a strategy. The kind of room that reads more New York than D.C., which the crowd seems to know.

  10. Rank 9. Kiyomi

    Sushi

The chef behind this 16-seat omakase counter built his D.C. following at a food hall, which is a slightly unglamorous origin story for something this polished. Kiyomi is a proper sushi counter now, with a weekday lunch omakase that remains the kind of deal that makes regulars feel like insiders, and a Friday dinner omakase for anyone who wants the full, unhurried version.

  11. Two blocks from the actual White House, this extended-stay hotel trades nightly-rate thinking for full kitchens, in-suite laundry, and enough square footage to forget you packed a suitcase. Suites run from one-bedroom to penthouse, all dressed in the kind of restrained luxury that suits a city where everyone is here on business. The in-house lounge doubles as bar, workspace, and informal meeting room, for when self-sufficiency only goes so far.

  12. A hotel one block from the Treasury Building, which puts it about as close to the White House as anything that isn't the White House. The interiors run toward bold, design-forward choices that would raise eyebrows among the city's more buttoned-up regulars, which is precisely the point. Pennsylvania Avenue has never been known for its nightlife, and Hotel Washington seems quietly determined to do something about that.

  18. Rank 22. Barbouzard

    Southern French Mediterranean

The gougères come with a side of Comté fondue, because why not gild the lily twice. Barbouzard is a glitzy Southern French dining room from Cédric Maupillier, and it reads more Riviera than Washington, which is the whole point. The deconstructed bouillabaisse and plancha scallops in curry sauce show a chef having fun with the format. At lunch, the K Street crowd fills in around a brisk prix fixe that moves fast enough to make a noon reservation feel civilized.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
