The 105-foot bar running the length of the lobby sets the tone: a design hotel that takes the calm seriously. Dark wood, black stone, and muted fabrics give the place a spa-like stillness unusual for the middle of Jing'an District, and floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto the park rather than the street. A Forbes Four Star and a Michelin Key, with a 25-meter pool and full spa downstairs for anyone who came to Shanghai to genuinely decompress.

A private collection of Chinese antiques lines the walls of this low-lit, polished-wood dining room inside the Tangxiang Cultural Space on Xikang Road. Obscura holds a Michelin star for its tasting-menu cooking, which folds Sichuan tradition and forgotten regional techniques into something genuinely its own. The chef duo spent a year crossing China before opening, and the research shows on the plate without feeling like homework.

Floors 30 through 59 of the Jing An Kerry Centre, which means the lobby's wall-of-water feature is technically closer to the clouds than to the street. This is a luxury hotel in the Shangri-La mold, so more is always more: marble bathrooms with heated floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, suites with silver mosaic walls and Bulgari products. The lap pool sits under a sky dome, and the 55th-floor lounge turns Shanghai's skyline into wallpaper.
