The atrium alone justifies a detour: a spiraling ramp that reads as a Guggenheim-meets-ice-cream-cone dropped inside a Victorian railway hotel. The red brick facade on Liverpool Street gives nothing away, but inside you get bamboo-filled galleries, fireplaces the size of closets, and plasterwork from another century. Rooms are sensibly businesslike, the minibar is complimentary (booze aside), and the service runs warm without the attitude City hotels sometimes breed.
