Oak paneling, no white walls, and a garden laid out by Victorian landscape pioneer William Robinson, whose former home this was. Gravetye Manor is a small country house hotel, just seventeen rooms, close enough to Gatwick to be practical and far enough from London to feel like another century entirely. The staff pull off the difficult trick of being correct without being stiff, and the Michelin Guide awarded it two Keys.
