A former tatami shop, two centuries old and now holding exactly two guest rooms, is about as intimate as lodging gets. This ryokan in the lake district outside Kyoto takes the traditional format and quietly rewires it: a sauna and cold plunge stand in for the usual onsen, and one room is laid out in Western style, which surprises. A small on-site restaurant serves seasonal food with real care. The kind of place where the detail-to-guest ratio is almost comically high.
