HIRASANSOU
Japanese
A wooden ryokan-style restaurant tucked into the forested foothills of Mount Hiei, where a 600-year-old sacred tree anchors a rippling water garden outside and hinoki, chestnut, and cedar warm the rooms within. The cooking is Japanese, the wine cellar runs to a thousand bottles, and the setting is so far removed from ordinary life that guests arrive looking slightly stunned, which may be the point.
