Geometric Kazakh-patterned rugs and a cool blue palette anchor the 220 rooms of this InterContinental hotel in central Yining, a city tucked into the Ili River valley near the Kazakh border. Two restaurants cover a lot of ground, one Mediterranean with local Xinjiang produce, one a contemporary Chinese menu tracing the old Silk Road. The Lobby Lounge looks out over Sheshan National Scenic Area, which is a better view than most hotel lobbies manage.
