The seven-storey marble staircase alone is said to be worth $65 million, which puts the Rosewood London's priorities in perspective. This Forbes Five Star hotel occupies a grand Edwardian pile on High Holborn, originally built for an insurance company that clearly had ambitions beyond actuarial tables. Rooms are generous by London standards, and the suites ascend into near-parody, one wing having its own postcode. Scarfes Bar, named for the Gerald Scarfe illustrations covering its walls, is the warm, clubby heart of the place.
