Stone paths thread past teak villas and colonial-era buildings on the jungle edge of Luang Prabang, and the Nam Dong River does a lot of ambient work at this Forbes Four Star resort. Bill Bensley designed the interiors, which means maximalist wit held in careful check by the landscape. The tented spa goes deeper into the trees, meals lean on river fish and herbs cut to order, and mornings arrive smelling of frangipani and wood smoke from neighboring villages.
