A ryokan tucked into the volcanic slopes of Mount Unzen, where the hot springs are the property's own and the architecture, all Sukiya-zukuri joinery and paper screens, makes the forest outside feel designed. Fourteen freestanding villas have tatami floors and lacquerware, and the gardens are old enough to have a mood. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key. Unplugging here is less a lifestyle choice than an inevitability.
