La Crosse was named by French fur traders, which gives the Charmant Hotel a more legitimate claim to its Gallic name than most places calling themselves charming in Wisconsin. This boutique hotel sits on State Street in a small Mississippi River city that still uses the French word "coulée" for its river ridges. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key, which is the travel guide's way of seconding the name.
