Outside the front door stands a yew tree so old it was already ancient when Rome fell. The Fortingall is a small Arts and Crafts hotel in a Perthshire village that also, with a straight face, claims Pontius Pilate as a local. Inside, the rooms run to four-poster beds, copper baths, ochre and dusky rose walls, and sash windows looking out over the glen. It's the kind of place that makes you feel history is genuinely crowding the car park.
