1. The Tides Inn

    A waterfront resort on its own peninsula since 1947, the Tides Inn offers the unhurried pleasures of Chesapeake Bay life—nature tours, wine tastings, the occasional mindfulness retreat—all staffed with an instinct for when to simply disappear. The 2020 renovation refreshed its nautical rooms and public spaces without disturbing the Michener-novel serenity that draws people back.
