  1. Yardy Rum Bar

Save to a list Write a review On the Way Around

A sea-foam green Victorian near downtown Eugene is an unlikely home for a West Indian rum bar, but here we are, and Oregon is better for it. Yardy started as a food truck and graduated to a cheerful brick-and-mortar where sorrel punch anchors the cocktail list and pholourie, fried chicken sandwiches, and twice-fried plantain jibaritos do the heavy lifting. A 2025 New York Times Restaurant List pick and a James Beard semifinalist.

    The dishes from the writeups

    • Pholourie

“Your first stop on the food menu should be the pholourie, heady split-pea fritters sauced with mango, tamarind and peppers.”

      The New York Times, 2025
    • Fried chicken sandwich

“The formidable fried chicken sandwich can be configured to your exact tangy-and-spicy needs with Bajan peppa, tamarind sauce, salsa rosada and the house pepper mix.”

      The New York Times, 2025
    • Jibarito No. 2

“The Jibarito No. 2, griyo pork zinged with Scotch bonnets and Haitian pikliz slaw nestled between two twice-fried plantains, is the final sandwich boss.”

      The New York Times, 2025

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
