The Best Hotels Near The Dipping Lugger, by the Record

  1. The first tee of Royal Dornoch is 100 yards from the front door, which tells you most of what you need to know about this 15-room hotel. The main house is built in that warm Sutherland sandstone, has been around forever, and sits within easy walking distance of both the beach and town. A fine-dining restaurant called Mara is on-site, and the Michelin Guide has awarded it one Key. Small, characterful, and unapologetically golf-first.

  2. A converted Victorian station hotel sitting a short walk from Royal Dornoch Golf Club, which is almost certainly why you've found it. Inside, grand staircases and wainscoting set a properly baronial tone, stag's heads survey the scene without irony, and self-aware tartan accents keep things from tipping into theme-park Highlands. It's the kind of place that makes a cold, windswept round feel like a reasonable life choice.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. It runs on the scored places nearby: more good stuff within reach, higher score. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
