The Best Hotels Near Imaginary Factory, by the Record

  1. A hotel a block from the University of Wisconsin campus that actually has something to say for itself, which is rarer in college-town lodging than it should be. The Graduate by Hilton has the feel of a place that knows its neighborhood without leaning on it too hard, cosmopolitan enough to hold its own against a school that punches well above the provincial. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  2. A former foundry gets the full boutique hotel treatment here, and the bones are too good to cover up. Exposed brick, iron details, and custom wood furnishings do the heavy lifting, giving rooms a look that somehow reads more handsome than self-conscious about it. A steakhouse sits just off the lobby, and the surrounding blocks of Beloit fill out the rest. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. Most of it is the record: the scored places within reach, weighed by distance, so more good stuff nearby means a higher score. The rest is how life is in that country and what it's like right there: how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are, the air, and the weather. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
