The Best Hotels Near La Vallée Verte, by the Record

  1. A boutique hotel in a university town that had the audacity to hang Basquiat-inspired street art next to Moroccan tiles and bespoke Barcelona carpets, all inside a sleek brick building that looks perfectly composed from the outside. Rooms go the other direction, calm Nordic oak and upcycled luggage racks, with floor-to-ceiling soundproofed windows over a park. The rooftop has hammocks. Downstairs, the bar grows its cocktail ingredients on the back wall.

  2. Hardenberg Castle has been a ruin since the 18th century, which only makes the half-timbered hotel at its foot feel more atmospheric. This Relais & Châteaux property holds a Michelin Key, and the rooms earn it: coffered walls, antique furnishings, original art, and balconies facing either the castle or the courtyard. The spa has whirlpools with castle views, the distillery spirits are complimentary, and Sunday brings a free guided tour of the ruins above.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. It runs on the scored places nearby: more good stuff within reach, higher score. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
