It's casual, seating is tight, and the line can stretch, but this is the kind of place you drag out-of-towners to when you want to show off what Oakland actually is.

Dim sum in a San Leandro strip mall sounds like a dare, but Pearl Bay Tea House pulls it off with blue ceiling lights, lazy Susans on every big table, and a crowd that came ready to share. The San Francisco Chronicle flagged it as one of the best in the Bay Area, and the shrimp balls alone make a solid argument, arriving crackling loud enough that the staff cuts them with scissors. Classic and worth the trip.

The meatball on focaccia is legitimately great, and the bread gets toasted in a little oven behind the bar, which is exactly the kind of low-key detail that separates a real neighborhood spot from everything else. Regulars, tourists who did their homework, and very little pretension.

A little French sandwich counter tucked among the downtown towers, Cafe du Soleil is where the office crowd lines up on their lunch break, badges still clipped to their blazers. The prosciutto sandwich is the move, and the niçoise combo gives you salad credit so you feel like an adult. Seating is basically a rumor, but Yerba Buena Gardens is right there if you're willing to eat outside like a civilized person.
