Rank 3. Alem’s Coffee
Eritrean
This Eritrean cafe in Oakland has been a neighborhood anchor for years, and it shows. Regulars linger outside with bold coffee while newcomers wander in and immediately feel like they belong. Come for breakfast and get the shihan ful, a fava bean stew you scoop with crusty bread that will quietly ruin you for other mornings. Lunch holds its own too, but the breakfast alone is reason enough to make the drive from the city.

Rank 6. Sirene
American Wine Bar
Sirene is a neighborhood wine bar in Oakland where the menu somehow pairs marinated raw fish with fried chicken and makes it feel completely inevitable. Belly up to the bar for a glass of something interesting or a Chartreuse slushy, or settle into the vine-covered back patio for a full meal. The crowd is the kind that knows what they're drinking and isn't showing off about it. Exposed brick, warm service, zero pretension.

Rank 11. JollyJolly Coffee & Kitchen
Caribbean Coffee Shop
A West Oakland coffee shop that also happens to be the spot for jollof rice, the Nigerian rice dish with a slow-building heat that sneaks up on you. Add plantains, stewed meats, or keep it vegan. The fufu and egusi soup are worth your time too. It's casual, seating is tight, and the line can stretch, but this is the kind of place you drag out-of-towners to when you want to show off what Oakland actually is.

Rank 22. Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe
Italian Wine Bar
A North Beach institution that's been around forever, Mario's is a tiny, sun-faded cafe where the walls are plastered with old photos and the focaccia sandwiches are the reason people keep coming back. The meatball on focaccia is legitimately great, and the bread gets toasted in a little oven behind the bar, which is exactly the kind of low-key detail that separates a real neighborhood spot from everything else. Regulars, tourists who did their homework, and very little pretension.

Rank 29. Breadbelly
Asian American bakery
This James Beard-winning bakery on Clement Street has built a cult following around Asian American pastries that change often enough to keep regulars guessing. The kaya toast, all coconut-pandan jam and pillowy bread, is the thing to get, but the sandwiches on house-made pan de sal hold their own too. Grab something, find a spot outside, and watch the Richmond do its thing.

Rank 31. Mộng Thu Cafe
Vietnamese Coffee Shop
A tiny Vietnamese soup shop on Hyde Street that earns its cult following one bowl at a time. The room is small and unpretentious, full of people who clearly know exactly what they're ordering before they sit down. The soups are the whole point, rich and fragrant in ways that remind you soup can actually be interesting. Come hungry and plan to sop up every last bit of broth with bread.

Rank 32. Cinderella Bakery
Russian Bakery
This cheerful Russian bakery and cafe has been a fixture in the Richmond District's Russian neighborhood for years, and it earns its place. Come for borsch, pillowy piroshki, and pelmeni that feel like someone's grandmother made them, even if yours never did. The crowd is a warm mix of regulars who know exactly what they want and newcomers slowing down to read the case. Save room for cake.

Rank 35. Kantine
Scandanavian-Inspired
A Scandinavian café on Market Street that takes baked goods very seriously, which is exactly the energy you want at 9am. The cardamom buns and gingery caramel cookies taste like someone spent a long, dark winter perfecting them. Grab a tartine on sprouted rye or post up on the sidewalk with coffee and watch the full spectrum of San Francisco walk past. The crowd is relaxed, laptop-friendly, and definitely in no rush.

A little French sandwich counter tucked among the downtown towers, Cafe du Soleil is where the office crowd lines up on their lunch break, badges still clipped to their blazers. The prosciutto sandwich is the move, and the niçoise combo gives you salad credit so you feel like an adult. Seating is basically a rumor, but Yerba Buena Gardens is right there if you're willing to eat outside like a civilized person.

Dim sum in a San Leandro strip mall sounds like a dare, but Pearl Bay Tea House pulls it off with blue ceiling lights, lazy Susans on every big table, and a crowd that came ready to share. The San Francisco Chronicle flagged it as one of the best in the Bay Area, and the shrimp balls alone make a solid argument, arriving crackling loud enough that the staff cuts them with scissors. Classic and worth the trip.

Rank 65. Diamond Head General Store
Hawaiian Coffee Shop
A Hawaiian plate lunch spot on the Peninsula that earns genuine loyalty from the kind of people who plan their errands around a meal. The mochiko fried chicken is craggy, peppery, and dangerously good cold the next day, which tells you something. Portions are enormous, shave ice is the real deal, and the grab-and-go Spam musubi moves fast. Casual, cheap, and the line is worth it.

Rank 90. Valley
Wine bar
A Bib Gourmand wine bar on the Sonoma Plaza that somehow manages to be genuinely laid-back about the whole wine thing, which in wine country is practically a superpower. The list leans organic and biodynamic, adventurous without being intimidating, and the small rotating food menu holds its own. Locals in flannel and couples doing a long weekend fill the room. Everything's meant to be shared, and the vibe is very much stay a while.

Rank 92. Madera
Contemporary New American Coffee Shop
Fine dining inside the Rosewood Sand Hill hotel, set against the Santa Cruz Mountains with vaulted ceilings and a fireplace that makes the whole room feel like a very expensive ski lodge. The crowd is exactly what you'd expect: Patagonia vests on people who could afford cashmere. The kitchen keeps things elegant but unfussy, leaning on local ingredients and an almond wood-fired grill that quietly improves everything it touches.
