The Best Places to Drink Near Midori, by the Record

  1. Kitchen knives stabbed into the walls, Alice in Wonderland theatrics, and a staircase that appears to float set the stage at this cocktail bar in Bairro Alto. It sits inside Ljubomir Stanisic's restaurant group, but the vibe here is its own thing, Latin-leaning drinks in a Victorian gothic room that Hendrick's gin helped design, which tells you something about the energy. Wear something interesting; the room is clearly trying to.

  2. Around 200 bottled and canned beers line the shelves of this craft beer bar on a quiet Lisbon square near Príncipe Real. Pale wood and plywood give it an IKEA-meets-classroom vibe, which sounds worse than it is, especially once you're deep into something Belgian or Canadian you'd never find elsewhere. It's been around forever by craft beer bar standards, and the range, spanning Belgium, Sweden, the US, and beyond, still pulls serious drinkers across town.

  4. Rank 5. Park

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar on the fifth floor of a multi-storey car park, which sounds like a dare until you see the view. The Bairro Alto rooftops stretch out below a genuine garden, complete with trees, flowers, and a timber chalet structure that belongs on a ski slope and somehow belongs here too. Lisbon's hills make rooftop bars easy; finding one this absurd and easygoing is harder.

  5. Polished concrete floors and a back bar stacked with twenty-odd mezcals and scores of tequilas set the tone at this funky Lisbon taqueria, where drinking is a perfectly valid reason to show up. The Latin cocktail list is taken seriously, and regulars who never order food occupy the bar stools without apology. Casual, loud, and happily unpretentious, it's the kind of place that makes Lisbon's growing cocktail scene feel less like a trend.

  6. Rank 7. Double 9
