The collections worth a trip on their own: museums the expert lists and guides rank among the world's essential rooms, best first.

  1. A Museum of Wine Culture with 4,000 square metres of permanent exhibition space anchors this Rioja winery, alongside a Garden of Bacchus planted with 220 grape varieties. It lands at number 24 on the World's 50 Best Vineyards list. The museum, the gardens, a gastrobar, and a restaurant sit inside a sprawling modern complex, making it the kind of place you arrive at for an hour and leave several hours later, marginally wiser about terroir.

  4. The sweet Constantia wines here once reached Napoleon's table on St. Helena, which gives you a sense of how far this estate's reputation traveled. Groot Constantia is Cape Town's oldest wine estate, set against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain with views out toward False Bay. The self-guided visitors route takes in Cape Dutch architecture, a wine and cultural history museum, and cellars where the revived Grand Constance dessert wine is still made.

  5. A Beaux-Arts building that used to be the city's main library now holds one of the largest Asian art collections in the Western hemisphere, spanning India, China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, and beyond. Pottery, weapons, calligraphy, snuff bottles, and a fully reconstructed Japanese tearoom share space with a standout Chinese bronze collection. The redesigned galleries organize the sprawl around 15 anchor masterpieces, which helps considerably.

  6. Renzo Piano gave this natural history museum and aquarium a living roof planted entirely in native California greenery, which feels appropriate for a place that houses a rainforest, a planetarium, and a penguin colony under one roof. Kids can sleep over beneath the stars and wake up next to the fish tanks. Adults get Thursday NightLife events with DJ sets and full run of the exhibits, which is a more interesting Thursday than most.

  7. The Snøhetta-designed expansion gave SFMOMA a half-block-long living wall of native plants and a rippling fiberglass facade meant to echo the Bay, so the building makes an argument before you're even inside. The modern and contemporary collection runs deep, and the museum store is genuinely its own destination, stocked with San Francisco landmark chess pieces and Lichtenstein-inspired ceramics. Clear a full day.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
