The Best Hotels in Maui, by the Record

The best hotels in Maui, by the professional record: Forbes Travel Guide, Michelin Guide, and 50 Best have all weighed in, and their honors are what rank this list. Four Seasons Resort Lana'i comes out on top, and the record runs deepest in Lahaina and Lanai City.

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort hold the next two places. Michelin Guide shows up on more of this list than any other guide, with Forbes Travel Guide next.

Categories

  1. Lanai has no traffic lights, most of its roads are unpaved, and the Four Seasons sits on a bluff above one of the few beaches in Hawaii inside a marine reserve. It's a full-scale luxury resort, Forbes Five Star and Michelin Key, with a Jack Nicklaus golf course, a spa, koi ponds, and enough pool area to get genuinely lost. Spinner dolphins pass offshore while guests book Jeep excursions or do nothing whatsoever, which is also a perfectly defensible plan.

  2. The adults-only serenity pool, where you float with a spicy hibiscus margarita while staring at Lanai, is the one that matters most. This Forbes Five Star resort on Maui's sunny Wailea coast is where the first season of White Lotus was filmed, so yes, you will recognize the lobby. Multiple pools, oceanview restaurants, and an outdoor gym that at least lets you feel the trade winds while you suffer. A Michelin Key holder.

  3. The restaurant is a Nobu partnership and the pool is lined with lava rock, but Sensei Lanai exists firmly in the wellness-resort category, not the beach-vacation one. Set upcountry on a quiet island, it trades ocean views for gardens, guided fitness, nutrition consultations, and the kind of sleep you forgot you could have. The rooms run spare in their design and lavish in everything else, which is more or less the whole philosophy.

  4. Fifty-four acres of north-shore Maui with Pacific views that reach Molokai on a clear day. This Forbes Four Star resort sits inside the larger Kapalua property, which means guests get two championship golf courses, miles of hiking trails, marine sanctuaries, and a tennis garden without ever hitting the tourist scrum down in Lahaina. The three-tier pool and its 20,000-square-foot sundeck handle the days when doing nothing is the whole point.

  5. The rooms have no televisions, no phones, and no alarm clocks, which is either the selling point or the dealbreaker depending on who you are. This resort on Maui's remote eastern shore is the kind of place people describe as a "reset," and for once that word fits. The Michelin Guide has it among its selected hotels. Come with nowhere to be and no one expecting a reply.

  6. Sunrise yoga on the North Shore, with the kind of setting that makes participation feel less like a chore and more like showing off. Lumeria is a wellness retreat selected by the Michelin Guide, and it leans hard into the healing arts, from meditation to organic farming, without shaming the guests who came mainly to sleep until noon. The vibe is quietly earnest rather than preachy, which puts it firmly in a different universe from Maui's mai tai resorts.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. It runs on the scored places nearby: more good stuff within reach, higher score. If it looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
