Rank 1. Musaafer
Indian
A Michelin-starred Indian fine-dining restaurant inside the Galleria mall, which is either a joke or a statement, and Musaafer is clearly the latter. The grand hall, with its arches, towering windows, and labyrinthine layout, feels more like a palace than a food court neighbor. The menu traces the chef's journey across India's states, so the range is wide and the spicing is careful. The Paan Negroni at the bar is a fine place to start.

A chandelier made from over 15,000 Czech crystals sets the tone in the lobby, and the hotel only escalates from there. This independent luxury hotel in Uptown Houston holds a Forbes Five Star and a Michelin Key, with rooms starting at 500 square feet, marble bathrooms stocked with Acqua di Parma, Frank Stella originals on the walls, and a spa, pool, two restaurants, a cocktail bar, and a patisserie on the grounds.

Rank 4. Hidden Omakase
Sushi
The chefs pause after every course to hold up the whole fish they just cut from, which is either theater or education depending on your mood. Hidden Omakase is an 18-seat omakase counter tucked inside a strip mall, where Marcos Juarez, an Uchi alum, runs through nigiri that pulls Thai, Vietnamese, and Latin influences into the lineup. BYOB with a corkage fee, so plan accordingly.

A pastel Italian villa dropped into Houston's Uptown neighborhood, Hotel Granduca plays the part with enough conviction that you half-expect to hear Vespas. It's a Forbes Four Star hotel with a private-residence feel: chauffeur service, personal trainers, a heated outdoor pool, and multiple spots to dine tucked into the veranda, conservatory, and club room. Quiet and self-contained enough to forget the city exists outside.

Rank 11. The Coffee Garden
Creative Coffee
A pistachio cream latte spiked with crushed spices and a hint of white chocolate is the kind of thing that turns a coffee run into a small event. This coffee shop inside the Conservatory food hall near the Galleria keeps the menu creative alongside the classics, with an ube cold foam so purple it looks like a prop. Non-caffeine options like charcoal lemonade and a hibiscus-pineapple-cinnamon tea mean no one gets left out of the fun.

Rank 14. Cooking Girl
Sichuan
Cooking Girl is a casual Sichuan restaurant, and the Westheimer branch is one of a sprawling family that has put a location within a short drive of most Houstonians. The menu leans bold and numbing, with flounder in a chili broth that arrives looking like a small, spicy aquarium. Vegetarians get a real section of tofu to work through, and the check stays friendly. Bring a friend with a high tolerance, or a good water supply.

Rank 14. Hachi
Sushi
Tucked into the base of a Galleria office building, Hachi is a sushi restaurant that splits its personality between an 18-course omakase and a full à la carte menu, so you decide how much of a commitment the evening becomes. The chef walks each omakase course to the table with its story attached, which sounds precious until it isn't. The nigiri is the thread either way.
