The Best Places in Galleria & Afton Oaks

  1. A Michelin-starred Indian fine-dining restaurant inside the Galleria mall, which is either a joke or a statement, and Musaafer is clearly the latter. The grand hall, with its arches, towering windows, and labyrinthine layout, feels more like a palace than a food court neighbor. The menu traces the chef's journey across India's states, so the range is wide and the spicing is careful. The Paan Negroni at the bar is a fine place to start.

  3. A chandelier made from over 15,000 Czech crystals sets the tone in the lobby, and the hotel only escalates from there. This independent luxury hotel in Uptown Houston holds a Forbes Five Star and a Michelin Key, with rooms starting at 500 square feet, marble bathrooms stocked with Acqua di Parma, Frank Stella originals on the walls, and a spa, pool, two restaurants, a cocktail bar, and a patisserie on the grounds.

  4. Rank 4. Urbe

    Mexican

Urbe is a counter-service Mexican spot in Uptown Park, with walls covered in bright folk art and a bakery case near the register that makes a strong case against returning to your desk. Hugo Ortega's casual place does margaritas at lunch, which the office crowd treats as a loophole. The restaurant is the kind where you order, find a table, and sneak a pastry for the road. Ortega is also up for a James Beard nod as Outstanding Restaurateur.

  5. A pastel Italian villa dropped into Houston's Uptown neighborhood, Hotel Granduca plays the part with enough conviction that you half-expect to hear Vespas. It's a Forbes Four Star hotel with a private-residence feel: chauffeur service, personal trainers, a heated outdoor pool, and multiple spots to dine tucked into the veranda, conservatory, and club room. Quiet and self-contained enough to forget the city exists outside.

  7. Rank 7. Burger-chan

  8. Tucked into the base of a Galleria office building, Hachi is a sushi restaurant that splits its personality between an 18-course omakase and a full à la carte menu, so you decide how much of a commitment the evening becomes. The chef walks each omakase course to the table with its story attached, which sounds precious until it isn't. The nigiri is the thread either way.

  12. Rank 12. The Coffee Garden

    Creative Coffee

A pistachio cream latte spiked with crushed spices and a hint of white chocolate is the kind of thing that turns a coffee run into a small event. This coffee shop inside the Conservatory food hall near the Galleria keeps the menu creative alongside the classics, with an ube cold foam so purple it looks like a prop. Non-caffeine options like charcoal lemonade and a hibiscus-pineapple-cinnamon tea mean no one gets left out of the fun.

  13. Uptown Sporting Club is a sports bar with a giant LED wall and a cocktail list that never got the memo about sports bars. The Caprese Martini runs on tomato-infused vodka, and the brûléed pineapple in the Out of Office suggests someone in the back owns a blowtorch for reasons beyond the game. Wagyu smashburgers and Korean fried chicken cover the food, and DJs take over once the final whistle blows.

  14. Cooking Girl is a casual Sichuan restaurant, and the Westheimer branch is one of a sprawling family that has put a location within a short drive of most Houstonians. The menu leans bold and numbing, with flounder in a chili broth that arrives looking like a small, spicy aquarium. Vegetarians get a real section of tofu to work through, and the check stays friendly. Bring a friend with a high tolerance, or a good water supply.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
