The Best Places to Drink and Stay in West Asheville & around

  1. The hand-operated elevator that has been ferrying people up this 1926 flatiron building since long before it was a hotel is a reasonable clue about the vibe. A 71-room boutique hotel at Asheville's sharpest corner, it converted former offices into rooms with Bellino linens and mountain views, keeping the bones intact. A wood-fired Italian restaurant, a rooftop bar, and a Prohibition-themed basement bar round out the floors between.

  2. A rooftop garden bar with Blue Ridge Mountain views anchors this boutique hotel in downtown Asheville, selected by the Michelin Guide. Rooms lean industrial-chic, with exposed brick, velvet loveseats, and bar carts stocked with craft spirits. The lobby's archways and towering bookshelves nod quietly to the Biltmore Estate. Downstairs, an all-day café and a basement bar with a bowling alley keep guests from wandering too far into the mountains.

  3. The bones of a steel mill are still visible in the exposed brick and heavy timber of this boutique hotel, which sits in a historically Black neighborhood called the Block on the south edge of downtown. Benne on Eagle, its Appalachian soul food restaurant, draws a crowd well beyond the guest list. Breweries and a Moog synthesizer museum are a short walk away, for when you need to explain the trip to someone.

  4. Contemporary art by local artists lines the walls at this design-forward hotel in the thick of Pack Square, which makes Asheville's self-styled Paris-of-the-South reputation feel at least a little earned. Rooms run tastefully upscale, Bargello handles Mediterranean food and wood-fired pizza downstairs, and District 42 takes care of cocktails. A Michelin Selected Hotel, it's the kind of property a town this size isn't supposed to be able to pull off.

  17. A restored Queen Anne house a few blocks north of downtown, the Blind Tiger is a 14-room guest house from Lark Hotels, the boutique group that has a habit of finding good neighborhoods and settling in quietly. Chestnut Hill keeps it residential and unhurried, which suits the whole approach. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
