The Best Places in East Greater London

  1. Bossa nova plays in the lounge while you work through snacks before the dining room even begins, which is a reasonable preview of how seriously Da Terra takes its own pacing. This two Michelin-starred tasting menu restaurant in Bethnal Green's Town Hall Hotel channels chef Rafael Cagali's Brazilian and Italian roots into something that feels genuinely its own, including a reimagined moqueca that makes the case on its own.

  2. Rank 2. Miga

    Korean

The bone broth recipe alone has been in the family for generations, which tells you most of what you need to know about this bright, airy Korean restaurant on Mare Street. Dad runs the open kitchen while his sons work the room, and a mural outside traces the whole culinary lineage back to Seoul. The menu is modern Korean without being showy about it, and the Michelin Bib Gourmand keeps the crowds loyal without tipping the place into self-importance.

  3. Rank 3. Behind

    Seafood

Eighteen seats around a horseshoe counter, and every one of them faces the kitchen, which is more or less the point. Behind is a one-Michelin-star seafood tasting restaurant in London Fields where the chefs plate, serve, and narrate each of the ten or so courses themselves. The seasonal menu runs wherever the seafood takes it. The whole room eats together, so lateness is less a social failing than a logistical one.

  4. Guinness bread ice cream sounds like a dare, but at Cafe Cecilia it has quietly become the thing people talk about on the way home. This bright, airy restaurant in Dalston sits beneath a modern apartment block but carries itself with a quasi-industrial warmth that papers over that fact nicely. The menu is seasonal and unfussy, letting ingredients do the work, with blackboard specials rounding out what the kitchen feels like cooking that day.

  6. Rank 5. Rogues

    Modern British

Bright prints against exposed concrete, mix-and-match wooden tables, and a menu that changes daily: this informal Modern British restaurant on Hackney Road is what happens when two friends graduate from pop-ups with their instincts intact. The cooking is overtly seasonal and full of considered combinations, the kind of food that makes you notice what's on the plate. Service is relaxed and genuinely warm without being performative about it.

  7. Rank 5. Sune

    Wine Bar

Sune (rhymes with "sooner," which is worth knowing before you ask) feels like a wine bar that quietly decided it wanted to be a neighborhood restaurant when it grew up. Around 14 sharing plates rotate on a fluid menu, built on simple pairings that don't crowd each other out. The room is small, the service is warm, and the kitchen in Hackney is the kind that makes restraint look like a gift.

    Italian

  9. Rank 10. Soft & Swirly

    Ice Cream Shop

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
