The Best Places to Stay in Jingumae & around

  1. Perched across the top floors of a Kitaaoyama high-rise, this hotel floats above one of Tokyo's most design-obsessed neighborhoods while keeping it very much in view through floor-to-ceiling windows. Rooms run mid-century modernist, all low-slung furniture and warm wood against the city grid below. Aoyama's boutiques, restaurants, and architecture are right outside, which is either the point or a very good problem to have. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  2. Steps from Shibuya Crossing, this design-forward hotel was built with creative professionals in mind, and the rooms make the case: contemporary colors, patterned textiles, clean modernist lines, and wardrobes sized for serious wardrobe rotation. The lobby lounge has enough distinct zones that you can actually use it, and the attached Torrent bar and restaurant runs modern Japanese food with a French fine-dining lean. Selected by the Michelin Guide.

  3. Staff uniforms at this Shibuya design hotel are sewn from textile offcuts salvaged off the local fashion industry's cutting-room floor, which tells you most of what you need to know about the place's ethos. Guest bikes are rescued abandoned ones, restored by local mechanics; the interiors run on reclaimed wood and vintage finds. The crowd skews young and effortlessly put-together, the way Shibuya crowds tend to.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
