The Best Places in Charlottenburg & Tiergarten

  1. On the 14th floor of the InterContinental, the city spreads out below like a very good argument for a window table. Hugos is a Michelin-starred fine dining room serving modern international tasting menus, six or eight courses, with wine pairings to match. The lighting is soft, the service is polished to a high gleam, and the room carries the quiet confidence of somewhere that has nothing to prove by being loud about it.

  2. The owner is a master confectioner and sculptor, which tells you something about the priorities here. This one-Michelin-star neighborhood restaurant in Charlottenburg is small, personal, and seasonal, with the best seats at the communal table facing the open kitchen. The handmade chocolates are for sale on the way out, which is either a genius move or a trap, depending on your willpower.

  4. Rank 4. 893 Ryotei

    Contemporary Japanese

The mirrored, graffiti-tagged façade on Kantstraße reads more like a dare than a dinner invitation. Inside, it's a sleek, black-walled Japanese restaurant where The Duc Ngo runs an open kitchen that pulls in a loud, happy crowd most nights. The menu spans sushi and sashimi on one end and sashimi taquitos and yuzu truffle dishes on the other, the kind of range that sounds chaotic on paper but somehow holds together on the plate.

  5. Exposed brick walls and art on every surface set the mood at this relaxed, modern tasting-menu restaurant in Charlottenburg. The team runs seasonal, farm-to-table cooking with a dry sense of humor: the chef's own words for the wafer-thin entrecôte and guanciale on wooden skewers are "our version of a Berlin kebab." Sets run five to seven courses, or you can build your own from the à la carte, vegan included.

  6. The leafy courtyard backs up against the Großer Tiergarten, and on a warm evening that setting does a lot of the work. This is a hotel restaurant inside SO/ Berlin Das Stue, done up in the style of a very comfortable living room, serving French classics, beef tartare, entrecôte, moules marinières. The Stue Bar next door handles aperitifs and digestifs, which is a sensible arrangement. Lunch brings a set menu at gentler prices.

  7. Rank 4. Diekmann

    French

The oyster bar sits front and center, framed by wine racks salvaged from an old colonial goods shop, which sets the tone for a bistro that takes its atmosphere as seriously as its cooking. The back room goes minimalist and quiet. Evenings bring a Franco-German menu, either à la carte or tasting, with enough creative turns to keep things interesting. Lunch is shorter and gentler on the wallet, with water, bread, and espresso folded in.

  10. Rank 4. Kitchen Library

  11. Rank 4. MINE

    Contemporary Italian

A family-run Italian restaurant steps from Ku'damm, occupying a space that was once, improbably, Berlin's smallest bar. The room is chic without being stiff, the menu leans on Italian classics with seasonal detours, and a pavement terrace gives the whole thing a relaxed, continental feel. A "Greatest Hits" set menu (for two or more) saves you from having to decide. The wine list is carefully chosen, and the cellar doubles as a private dining room.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
