Alford Arms
British
A Victorian pub on the village green in Hertfordshire, reached by following a succession of narrow lanes until you're fairly sure you've gone wrong. Inside there's a warming fire and genuine old-inn character; in summer the covered terrace, fitted with sheepskin-lined benches for when the evening turns, is where you want to be. The kitchen does traditional British cooking with confidence, no flourishes required.
