A 16th-century Baroque palace on the banks of the River Tâmega, about an hour from Porto, where the grandeur of the architecture and the minimalism of the 35 rooms have agreed to disagree. The hotel grows its own vinho verde on the estate, which turns up at the fine-dining restaurant downstairs. There's also a spa, an outdoor pool, and views of Amarante across the water that make doing nothing feel productive.
