Every room at this large resort in the hills above Hakone comes with its own private open-air onsen, which makes the public baths, already spectacular, feel almost redundant. Too big to call itself a ryokan but borrowing everything appealing about one: forest trails, mountain seclusion, seasonal Japanese cuisine, and the sound of waterfalls doing most of the therapeutic work before any massage is booked.
