The hotel sits so close to the 17th hole of the Old Course at St. Andrews that it's technically in play. A golf resort with real scale, it has spacious rooms in a calm contemporary style, the tartan kept mercifully to a minimum. The Kohler Waters Spa draws non-golfers with its hydrotherapy pools, and the Duke's Course means hotel guests can at least get a guaranteed tee-time somewhere, which in St. Andrews counts for something.
