A motel-shaped boutique hotel in the Tenderloin with a courtyard big enough to park a tour bus, which is not an accident. The Phoenix was a rock-and-roll crash pad for decades before boutique hotels were a category, hosting everyone from Bowie to Nirvana. Texas-based Bunkhouse now runs it, and the rooms are compact, bold, and comfortable without pretending to be luxury. The pool, ringed with palms, remains the social center.
