Fort Isabella's 17th-century barracks have been quietly repurposed into a thirty-room hotel, the original monumental windows and soaring ceilings kept intact. Auping beds and checkerboard rain showers fill the rooms; a shared living room with a bar holds the social center together. Woods, a canal, and a food hall sit just outside, and the old city is ten minutes by bike, which feels about right for a place that spent centuries being decidedly off-limits.
