The carved Jacobean fireplace in the bar is reason enough to take a seat and stay awhile. This is a traditional country pub and dining room in the Nottinghamshire countryside, doing hearty British cooking without apology. The local Stilton is the thing to order: Colston Bassett is one of only six places in the world licensed to make it, so skipping the cheese course here would be a genuine act of self-sabotage.
