    A sculpture commissioned for Nixon's 1972 visit still stands in the lobby, restored by its original maker, which sets the tone nicely for a hotel that takes its history seriously. The 68 rooms and suites channel a Jiangnan silk merchant's home, all rich textiles, maximalist florals, and freestanding baths angled toward the lake. Shangri-La's ultra-luxury debut property, and it comes with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a cocktail bar from Asia's 50 Best Bars already on site.
