A boutique hotel on Beishan Street where West Lake is literally your front view and the building itself is a protected cultural relic, its arched cornices and wooden lattice windows intact from the 1930s. The 12 suites were each designed by a professor from China's Academy of Art and named for Republican-era writers. Guests dine next door at the 1913 Restaurant, which handles classic Hangzhou cuisine. Small, storied, and not remotely anonymous.
