A former banking hall inside the Sofitel on Pall Mall sets the scene, all gilded heirloom grandeur, but the room wears it lightly. This is a brasserie de-luxe with a Michelin star, and Anthony Demetre's Modern British cooking matches the space without the fuss: generous portions, no theatrics. The custard tart has become such a fixture that removing it would apparently constitute a public-order event.
