  1. Rank 1. Akhanay Coffee Roasters

    Southeast Asian Coffee Shop

A bright blue truck parked outside a rock climbing gym is perhaps the least likely setting for a serious coffee program, and yet here we are. Akhanay is a specialty coffee truck drawing on Thai and Southeast Asian tradition, pouring drinks like a coconut cold brew and a mango sticky rice matcha. Orders go in online, and you collect them curbside, ideally before someone asks if you're there to climb.

  3. Cloud-shaped overhead lights hang above white subway tile and diner tables at this compact coffee shop on S St Mary's. Eight Ball grew out of a food truck and kept the no-fuss sensibility: cortados, lattes, espressos, and matchas, all built on beans from Creature Coffee. It's the kind of place that makes a midday iced coffee feel like a considered decision rather than a desperate one.

  4. A coffee shop painted entirely black, because of course it is, parked next to a music venue in case the aesthetic wasn't clear enough. The drinks go the other direction: colorful, Southeast Asian-inspired lattes built around pandan, black sesame, and ube soft serve, which makes the whole thing a cheerful contradiction. Worth arriving in the morning before the night crowd reclaims the block.

  5. A coffee truck parked at the Broadway News food truck park, MILA Coffee pulls its shots from Tweed beans out of Dallas and lets you customize with caramel or Mexican vanilla. The real draw is geography: it sits right next to Carnitas Don Raúl, so cyclists and regulars tend to linger on the benches outside long after the coffee's gone. Bring a jacket if the sky looks uncertain; cover is minimal.

  6. Goth velvet paintings and band prints share wall space with a rotating bean roster at this laid-back coffee shop tucked inside the Freight Gallery in the Lone Star District. The specialty drink menu is long, and tea gets the same serious treatment as coffee, which is rarer than it should be. Community events spill in from the adjoining gallery, giving the place the feel of a neighborhood hangout that happens to take your cup seriously.

  7. A King William neighborhood coffee shop so small that the bar, one round table, and a window counter fill the room completely, leaving the picnic tables outside to handle the overflow. Stranded pulls Proud Hound beans from Cincinnati for a dense, chocolatey cup, then builds a short menu of named regulars around house syrups. The staff keeps the music loud, which should tell you something about the vibe.

  10. Turkish coffee prepared in a cezve sits alongside shaken espresso and whatever baklava-flavored latte the team dreamed up this week. It's a small, cozy coffee shop in the King William area, with proper work tables and living-room chairs depending on your agenda. They rotate through local and national bakers for pastries, and tea drinkers have a London Fog waiting for them. The kind of neighborhood spot that pulls you in for twenty minutes and keeps you for two hours.

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
