  1. Nested at the foot of Doi Suthep Mountain inside Chiang Mai's city limits, this boutique resort manages to feel genuinely removed from everything, thanks to a compound layout dense with greenery. Rooms are contemporary with balconies; villas add private plunge pools. The spa pavilion drives much of the draw, with personalized programs folding in sound therapy, yoga, and massage. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  2. A resort built around what was once the British Consulate, the kind of origin story that earns its keep in atmosphere. Rooms and suites line the courtyard perimeter in warm teak and terrazzo, modern and polished rather than colonial, and Club Suites add daybeds on the balcony and a private butler. The Mae Ping river runs alongside, the courtyard pool and spa keep things calm by day, and the terrace bar in the old consulate building handles the evenings.

  3. A vegan retreat inside the old city walls, steps from Tha Pae Gate, where neither meat nor alcohol crosses the threshold, in strict Thai Buddhist fashion. The 39 rooms and suites lean into a breezy colonial style, each with its own balcony, and pool-facing rooms make it easy to forget the city entirely. Cooking classes are on offer, though the all-vegan, largely organic Thai and Western kitchen gives you every reason to stay put and let someone else handle it.

  4. Perched on the Ping River with the ruins of the ancient Lanna capital just across the water, RatiLanna is a resort that somehow pulls off genuine quiet in the middle of a city. Rooms and suites feel properly removed from everything, the spa dedicates each treatment room to a different corner of Thai culture, and the on-site restaurant leans hard into northern Thai cooking. There's also a Brazilian churrascaria, which nobody saw coming.

  5. The pavilions here are the reason to upgrade: two-story timber structures strung along a hillside above rice terraces, with floor-to-ceiling windows wrapping the whole view around you and a plunge pool or jacuzzi outside. This villa-style luxury resort just outside Chiang Mai also runs an elaborate spa, terrace and private-room dining, and an infinity pool that earns its cliché by pointing at exactly the right valley.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
