  2. A 1964 concrete hulk at Wilshire and Normandie, the LINE is a hotel that leans into its brutalist bones rather than apologizing for them. The Sydell Group renovation turned 384 art-filled rooms into a Koreatown landmark, and the Hollywood Hills-facing rooms frame the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Sign like a painting someone left on your wall. Design-forward guests who find warm neutrals suspicious tend to feel at home here.

  3. Nine rooms, suites, and cottages tucked into a Mediterranean Revival estate in Silver Lake that has, over the years, been a silent-film star's mansion, a girls' school, and a Franciscan convent. The interior designer who eventually bought it had a conventional boutique hotel in mind; the building had other plans. It holds a Michelin Key, and the rooms feel less like accommodations than borrowed sets from a film that never got made.

  16. Complimentary Stanley coolers and beach bags packed with towels greet you at check-in, which sets the tone for this 25-room boutique hotel one block from the Balboa Peninsula shore. The rooftop deck looks out over the harbor, and the whole place leans hard into the idea that you came here to do nothing useful. A low-key, sun-faded-in-a-good-way escape for anyone who doesn't need a sprawling resort to feel like they're on vacation.

  68. A converted motor lodge on Sunset Boulevard, Le Petit Pali Brentwood is a 25-room boutique hotel tucked into one of LA's quieter, leafier neighborhoods. Four bungalow buildings wrap around patios with stone fountains and string lights strung over Adirondack chairs, giving it the feel of a private garden compound. Brentwood runs short on hotels by design, so staying here is about as close as you get to the residential calm the locals guard so carefully. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  88. A modernist former motor lodge in North Hollywood that leaned into its past instead of apologizing for it, the Garland kept the grasscloth wallpaper, wood paneling, and stone fireplace, then painted the gym retro orange for good measure. Rooms have private balconies, and the hotel is dog-friendly in a way that goes beyond a shrug, with toys and bowls waiting on arrival. The Michelin Guide includes it in its selected hotels.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
