The Best Places in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera & around

  1. Rank 1. Paradiso

    Cocktail Bar

You get in through the freezer door at the back of a pastrami shop, which tells you most of what you need to know about Paradiso's priorities. The narrow wood-panelled cocktail bar beyond it has a DJ, elaborate glassware that borders on theatrical, and a second secret room behind the bathroom mirror, because one hidden bar was apparently not enough. It sits at number four on the World's 50 Best Bars list.

  2. Rank 2. Dr. Stravinsky

    Cocktail Bar

Infusing jars line the walls and the menu is organized by production technique, which tells you everything about the kind of cocktail bar Dr. Stravinsky is. Fermentation and distillation are the house obsessions, so expect kombucha, kefir, and a vodka distilled with soil turning up in your glass. It has a spot on the World's 50 Best Bars list, and the lab-equipment decor makes that feel less surprising than it should.

  3. Ian Schrager's boutique hotel sits in El Born, where medieval alleyways eventually spit you out into the lobby's cool, scented air. The building plays it quiet from the street, but inside it's all clean lines and a minimalist calm that somehow still feels warm. Rooms stay understated, the drinking and dining options give you reasons to linger, and the service reads as attentive rather than performative. A Forbes Four Star property.

  4. The rooftop pool sits six floors above the waterfront, with the Mediterranean laid out beyond it and the Gothic Quarter a short walk below. Serras is a boutique hotel, just 28 rooms, tucked into a restored building on the Passeig de Colom where the old port meets the old city. The rooms are small in number and considered in design, and the staff-to-guest ratio shows.

  5. A Soho House tucked into an 18th-century building in the Gothic Quarter, with Catalan architectural bones doing quiet battle with the brand's signature bohemian interiors. Rooms run from Tiny to Medium, and they mean it, but the square footage is beside the point. Guests get temporary membership status, which unlocks Cecconi's, a rooftop bar over Marina Port Vell, and the run of a spa that holds its own against dedicated clubs. The Michelin Guide awarded it one Key.

  6. Rank 6. Aldea

    Cocktail Bar

A rotary evaporator behind the bar is either a red flag or a very good sign, and at this cocktail bar on an El Born corner, it's the latter. The team uses the lab-grade distiller to pull flavor from oyster shells, nachos, and roasted peppers, then serves the results in quietly classic glasses. Ranked among Europe's 50 Best Bars, Aldea drinks like a science project that remembered to be delicious.

  7. A Roman defense tower with a rooftop pool is a pretty good pitch for a hotel, and Mercer Barcelona delivers both without making you choose between the centuries. Set deep in the Gothic Quarter, the 28 rooms weave exposed medieval brickwork into a palette of cream and dark wood that somehow never feels like a museum. The fourth-floor terrace looks straight at the Gothic Cathedral, and there's a bar up there too. It holds a Michelin Key.

  8. No children, no photos, and the hotel will not apologize for either rule. The Wittmore is a small boutique hotel tucked into a narrow Gothic Quarter alley, and it leans hard into the neighborhood's dim romanticism: red velvet loveseats, wood paneling, a fireplace, and French doors onto a courtyard. Rooms soften the mood with botanical wallpaper and vintage telephones. The rooftop terrace at sunset is a different world entirely. It holds a Michelin Key.

  9. Rank 9. Marlowe

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar in El Born that spent decades as Gimlet before the current team renamed it Marlowe, a nod to Raymond Chandler's gimlet-sipping detective. The Philip Marlowe connection is a bit of a wink given the original bar's legacy, and regulars still order gimlets even though the drink rotated off the quarterly menu. Small, unhurried, and staffed by people who clearly enjoy what they're doing.

  10. An 18th-century building in the Gothic Quarter where the original sgraffito is still on the facade and three-century-old brickwork lines the lobby. This aparthotel's 31 rooms pair exposed beams and floor-to-ceiling windows with kitchenettes, so you can live like a local rather than a tourist, which is a fine ambition two minutes from Las Ramblas. Top-floor suites add private terraces and hydromassage baths for anyone who needs convincing.

  11. The rooftop infinity pool, hovering above El Born with cathedral views, is the clearest argument for booking here over anywhere else. This city-center hotel sits where the Gothic Quarter meets one of Barcelona's coolest neighborhoods, and the 147 rooms lean into minimalist chic without losing the thread, particularly the suites with their high ceilings and cathedral-facing windows. Soundproofing is borderline aggressive, which most guests consider a compliment.

  12. A boutique hotel on the edge of Parc de la Ciutadella in El Born, housed in a 19th-century building whose interiors were reimagined by a former Soho House design director. Rooms have Catalan timber floors, hand-crafted beds, and private terraces overlooking the park. The rooftop pool comes with a bespoke egg sculpture, because of course it does. Spanish wine and cheese from small organic producers, a chic library, and a Refresh Room for early arrivals round things out.

  15. Rank 15. Especiarium

    Cocktail Bar

Especiarium is a cocktail bar in El Born that builds its drinks around spices, which explains the Cardamom, served in a bowl shaped like the pod itself. The currykiri arrives crowned with a giant fruit vapor bubble that's best popped with your nose, at some risk of sneezing. The staff are chatty and unhurried, and nobody minds if you just want a Negroni in the low-ceilinged room, which stays busy without getting packed.

  16. The wine bottles lining the walls aren't decoration so much as inventory, and on a busy night you'll be standing among them. This compact little wine bar sits across the square from Santa Maria del Mar, and the room is refreshingly scruffy for a place with a list this good, cavas and sherries alongside an eclectic international rotation. Grab a stool at the marble counter if one opens up; otherwise, glass in hand, you're on your feet.

  17. Rank 17. Eclipse Bar

    Cocktail Bar

A cocktail bar on the 26th floor of the W Hotel, with the kind of panoramic sweep across Barcelona that makes you forgive the scene happening around you. Ricardo Bofill handled the interiors, and the crowd arriving after dark is exactly who you'd expect. Go early enough to catch the sunset before the DJs and the queue in the lobby below make the whole thing feel like a very stylish inconvenience.

  18. Blue-tiled walls, marble tables, and a zinc bar that has been pouring house cava since before anyone can remember: El Xampanyet is an old-school tapas bar on one of the prettiest streets in the Born. Anchovies in vinegar and fat green olives are the moves here, paired with cold glasses of cava. The kind of place where tourists and regulars agree for once, which is its own small miracle.

  19. Rank 17. G.M.T

    Cocktail Bar

Wood paneling, a mahogany counter, worn seats, and a cut-out of a bowler-hatted man peeping through blinds: GMT lands somewhere between a Fleet Street pub and a noir detective's waiting room. The cocktail bar took its name from a shortening of Gimlet, not the time zone, which tells you something about how seriously they take the bit. Soft jazz and low lighting keep the mood intact for anyone who shows up in a trench coat, ironically or otherwise.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
