The Best Places in Marina District & around

  1. The menu arrives as a poem, literally, and the meal that follows is Dominique Crenn's three-Michelin-star argument that fine dining and a pescatarian kitchen are not in tension. The eight-table room in Cow Hollow is filled with her father's artwork and family photos, and the tasting menu works through seafood and produce with French technique and a modernist's sense of play. Forbes Five Star as well, if you needed the coordinates.

  2. Rank 2. A16

    Italian

The wood-burning oven is the heart of this Marina pizzeria, turning out Neapolitan-style pies with a smoky char while the open kitchen keeps the whole room warm and lively. The menu leans rustic Italian, pies and pastas shifting with the season, and the wine list ranges across regions most Italian restaurants ignore. Counter seats facing the oven are the ones to ask for. The Michelin Guide has given it a Bib Gourmand, and the room fills fast with families and regulars who booked ahead.

  3. Rank 3. Tiya

    Modern Indian

Cocktails named for San Francisco neighborhoods anchor the bar at this fine dining spot in Cow Hollow, where modern Indian cooking gets a California reframe. The kitchen folds seasonal produce into dishes that stay recognizably Indian while drifting somewhere new. Both à la carte and tasting menus are on offer, so you can commit as much or as little as the occasion calls for. The room is elegant without being stiff.

  7. The outdoor tables on Baker Street are as close to a Parisian sidewalk cafe as Cow Hollow gets, which is either charming or delusional depending on your mood. Côte Ouest is a French bistro where weekend brunch brings smoked salmon benedict on an open-faced croissant, and a Kir Royale seems less indulgent than it should at noon. The San Francisco Chronicle named it among the Bay Area's top French restaurants.

  8. The servers here will gladly walk you through the nuances of vegan cheeses without a trace of condescension, which sets the tone for this plant-based restaurant in Cow Hollow. The menu reads like a convincing case for skipping meat, and the burgers, built on mushrooms and spinach with chipotle aioli and tomato chutney, give skeptics a comfortable entry point. A good first date for the vegan-curious.

  9. Rank 12. Izzy's

    Steakhouse

Dry-aged beef over an open fire grill has anchored this San Francisco steakhouse since what feels like forever, and a thoughtful renovation kept the timber-and-brass room feeling current without erasing what made it. The bar stays lively and social in the way great American steakhouses always have, and the hospitality runs warm even if it can vary night to night. It landed on the World's Best Steak Restaurants list, which tracks.

  10. Mama's Luncheonette is a daytime takeout window in Cow Hollow that has built a following on things wrapped in foil. The breakfast burrito comes stuffed with smashed tater tots, soft scrambled eggs, avocado, and cheddar, and the thick-sliced house brisket is an add-on you'll want to say yes to. The salsa arrives in a small cup, so ask for extra. There's also a chicken caesar wrap, because lettuce deserves a tortilla too.

Eat Score

The score comes from the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin star outweighs a listicle. When you sort by what's nearby, distance changes the order, never the score.

      Stay Score

Four fifths of the score is the awards it's won, weighted by who gave them: a Michelin Key outweighs a listicle. The last fifth is where it is: the ranked places to eat and things to do around it, and how safe the country is. When you sort by what's nearby, distance from you changes the order, never the score.

          Best Place Score

The Best Place Score rates the area around a point, not any one place. The places are 60% of it: the best of what's within reach, weighed by distance. The setting is the other 40%: how life goes in that country (how people rate their own lives, how long and how well they live, how safe they are) and what it's like right there (the air, and the weather). If the score looks low, we probably haven't found enough critics out here yet.
