Twelve rooms over one corner of the Place des Vosges, Paris's oldest planned square, is a very confident statement from a small hotel. Evok's signature move, blending 17th-century grandeur with 1970s modernism, plays well here: stainless steel against black marble, a palette that reads contemporary rather than stuffy. Some suites have kitchenettes, Roman baths stand in for a full spa, and the Tea Room handles the light-bite-and-drink duties.
